Healthcare is sick.

Its illness has nearly reached a terminal level. Over the last 40 years, health care has progressively declined from a model meant to satisfy the medical, emotional and psychological needs of patients to a model meant to satisfy the financial needs of insurance companies and employers (www.simpd.org/patients.htm). Most patients are at a loss to explain why they cannot find a medical provider who can see them in a timely fashion, address all of their complaints in a non-hurried manner and promote disease prevention and overall wellness.

The Problem Today
The explanation is actually quite simple. Due to declining reimbursement from insurance companies, physicians are being forced to see greater numbers of patients each day. This in turn creates scheduling delays in getting timely appointments booked with your physician, which results in hurried and impersonal office visits and an inappropriate lack of focus on preventative medical care. Many physicians are as frustrated as their patients, as the current model of healthcare prevents them from focusing on the very reason they chose the career that they trained for…their patients.

A Refreshing Concept
Originating in 1996, a successful model of medical practice called “concierge medicine” has become an increasing trend from coast to coast. By using a retainer fee to bypass medical insurance, it allows the patients and their physicians to control the direction and cost of each individual’s healthcare management. There are now nearly 300 concierge practices in the country resulting in increasingly satisfied patients (and doctors) and improved overall healthcare.

Our Motivation
Prior to opening Grey Canyon Family Medicine, Dr. MacGillivray practiced Family Medicine for 8 years beneath the umbrella of managed care. Due to the constraints inherent in the classical health care model, it became more and more difficult for him to provide a high standard of comprehensive care to his patients. Grey Canyon Family Medicine represents his life-long dream of delivering dedicated, quality medical care for his patients, as well as to act as his patients’ most staunch advocate for their emotional, physical and social needs.
